Pillar of Light
Summer 2017
Skills: CAD, Machine Shop, Design for Assembly
Tools: Lathe, Mill, Machine Shop, Lasercutter, Sewing Machine, Rhinocerous
The Firefly Arts Collective reviewed my proposal and awarded me $1K to build the Pillar of Light for their annual week long arts festival. I designed the panels of the Pillar in Rhinocerous using patterns in Islamic architecture and created them with lasercut blackout curtain fabric and translucent muslin. The frame is constructed with conduit tubing and straight and 3-way fittings that were machined to perfectly fit the tubes. The base is split into four pieces for easy transport. The entire base and frame can be assembled using just two sizes of hex keys.
The Pillar of Light was shown at Figment Boston 2017 on the Kennedy Greenway and at the private Raw Wine event at the Steel Yard in Providence, RI.
